Curbless Shower Conversions in Berkeley: How They're Built on Raised Foundations
What it takes to build a curbless shower in a Berkeley home: recessed floor framing, slope and drains, waterproofing, costs, and why raised foundations change the method.
The curbless shower, one continuous floor plane from bathroom into shower, no step, no lip, has moved from accessibility feature to design standard. Why curbless is worth wanting
The four-inch curb exists to keep water in, and it does that while also being the most-tripped-over object in the house. Removing it pays three ways: the room reads dramatically larger because the floor never stops, cleaning gets simpler because there is no grout-lined hurdle, and the shower becomes usable for every body that will ever live in the house, toddlers, grandparents, and anyone on crutches for a season. It is the cornerstone of every aging-in-place bathroom for the same reason.
The raised-foundation method
On a concrete slab, builders grind or form the recess. Berkeley’s pre-war homes stand on post-and-pier and perimeter foundations with wood-framed floors, so the recess is framed instead:
- Assessment. With the floor open, the joist direction, spacing, and condition under the future shower become facts. Pre-1930s framing sometimes needs sistering anyway, this is when it happens.
- The recess. The subfloor over the shower footprint is dropped, furring the surrounding floor or reframing the shower bay lower, so that after pan, membrane, and tile, the finished shower floor lands flush with the bathroom floor.
- Slope and drain. The pan is built at roughly a quarter inch per foot toward the drain. A linear drain along the wall or entry lets the whole floor slope as one plane, which is what allows large-format tile to run continuously; a center point drain needs small mosaic and compound slopes.
- Waterproofing. The membrane system wraps the pan, the walls, and critically the transition where the recess meets the room, then everything gets flood tested overnight before tile. In a curbless design the membrane detailing at the entry is the difference between a twenty-year shower and a subfloor problem, which is why this is not a first-timer’s project.
- Water management above the floor. With no curb, containment moves to design: a properly sized glass panel, a shower footprint deep enough that spray dies before the opening, and sometimes a second slope or trench drain at the entry on tight layouts.
Crawl-space access under most Berkeley homes makes the drain relocation straightforward plumbing rather than concrete surgery, one of the few ways a 1915 house makes a modern upgrade easier.
What it costs and when to do it

The timing rule is absolute: curbless is a decision for the design phase, while the floor is already open, not a retrofit onto a finished shower. Converting an existing curbed shower to curbless later costs most of the price of a full new shower.
Permit and inspection notes
Because the recess modifies floor framing, it belongs on the permit drawings, and the rough-in inspection covers the framing and drain work before anything closes.
