Schluter vs RedGard: Shower Waterproofing in Old Berkeley Houses

The two dominant shower waterproofing approaches compared, bonded sheet membranes vs liquid-applied, and why the stakes are higher inside hundred-year-old wood-framed Berkeley walls.

Tile is not waterproof. Grout is not waterproof. Every tiled shower that lasts is really a waterproof assembly wearing tile as a finish, and the assembly is a membrane you will never see again after week three of the remodel. In a Berkeley house framed from old-growth lumber in 1912, that invisible layer is protecting something irreplaceable, which is why the waterproofing conversation deserves five minutes of any homeowner’s attention before the tile conversation gets an hour.

The failure mode, and why old houses raise the stakes

A shortcut shower fails silently: moisture migrates through grout and tile into the wall cavity, and for a year or three nothing visible happens while framing wicks water. Then a ceiling stain appears in the room below, or baseboard paint bubbles, or a floor goes soft, and the correction is demolition of a nearly new bathroom plus whatever structure needs replacing. In a slab-built suburban house that is expensive. In a wood-framed pre-war Berkeley house, where the wet wall may also carry load and the repair means opening plaster in rooms that were never part of the project, it is the most expensive version of the mistake available.

Route one: bonded sheet membranes (Schluter Kerdi and kin)

The Kerdi system bonds a bright-orange polyethylene sheet membrane to the wall substrate with thinset, seams overlapped and corners detailed with preformed pieces; tile then bonds directly to the membrane. Its companion foam boards (Kerdi-Board) and integrated pan and drain components make the whole shower one engineered, documented system.

Its virtues are consistency and verifiability. Sheet thickness is factory-set, seams are visible and checkable, the documentation is exhaustive, and a flood test tells the truth before tile. Material cost runs a few hundred dollars above the liquid route on a typical shower, and most East Bay tile setters trained in the last fifteen years treat it as the default, especially on curbless builds, where the preformed transition detailing earns its price at the entry, exactly where a curbless conversion is most vulnerable.

Route two: liquid-applied membranes (RedGard and kin)

RedGard and its peers are elastomeric liquids rolled or troweled over cement board, curing into a seamless rubbery skin. Applied correctly, two coats, roughly 60 mils wet, verified by the product’s own thickness gauges, they waterproof perfectly well and cost less in material.

The honest caveat is that “applied correctly” is doing more work in that sentence than it does for a factory sheet. Thickness depends on the hand doing the rolling; corners and plane changes, plentiful in the niche-and-bench showers everyone wants, depend on careful buildup; and coverage is judged by eye and gauge rather than measured by factory. In experienced hands the system is legitimate, and on budget-conscious hall baths it keeps good projects affordable.

What decides the outcome

Three things matter more than the brand on the bucket:

  1. The installer knows the chosen system cold. Either system installed to its manufacturer’s spec and TCNA standards outlasts the tile on it; either one improvised fails.
  2. The flood test happens. Drain plugged, pan filled, left overnight, checked below, before tile. It is the one moment the assembly proves itself while correction is still cheap, and it is standard practice on professionally run East Bay projects.
  3. Movement is respected. Plane changes get silicone rather than grout, and assemblies are detailed to move slightly without tearing, worth an extra thought in a region where the ground itself occasionally votes.

The Berkeley bottom line

For premium builds, curbless entries, and any shower expected to serve for decades, the bonded-sheet system is the better default and the small material premium is cheap insurance. For tighter budgets in straightforward alcoves, a carefully applied liquid membrane over cement board is honest, proven construction. What no Berkeley homeowner should accept is the third option that still shows up behind failed showers here: cement board alone, no membrane, tile as raincoat. The old houses deserve better, and so does a $40,000 remodel.
